Short Guide to Ablution and Prayer [1]

 

Below is a quick and basic guide to prayer which highlights the main pillars of prayer and ablution. For a more detailed and thorough guide to the rules/methods of prayer, logon to www.quranproject.org/prayer

 

 

Wudu – The Ablution

 

The Wudu is a pre-requisite for the prayer

 

  1. Make intention for the ablution and say, ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of God)
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Rinse your mouth and nose
  4. Wash the face
  5. Wash the right arm including hand upto the elbow, then do the same for the left
  6. Wipe the head back and forth once
  7. Wash the right foot including its ankle, then do the same for the left

 

 

All actions of washing can be done once, twice or thrice except for wiping of the head which is done only once.

Note

Any part of what you find difficult to memorise you can replace with a supplication in your mother tongue like, ‘Glory be to Allah, All praise is due to Allah, Allah is the Greatest and there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.’ Until you can memorise it in Arabic.
 

Short Phrases Translated

 

Moving in Prayer  -  ‘Allah u Akbar’ ­– God is the Greatest

 

Bowing  - ‘Subhana rabbiyal Adheem’ – Glory be to God the most Magnificent

 

After Bowing while Standing - ‘Sami Allahu liman hamidah’ – God hears those who praise Him

-          Rabbana wa lakal hamd.’ Our Lord  to You belong all the praise

 

While Prostrating -  Subhana Rabbiyal a’la’ – Glory be to God, Most High

 

In between Prostrations - ‘Rabbigh firli war hamni.’  - My Lord forgive me and have mercy on me

 

Completing the Prayer -  ‘Assalam alaykum wa rahmatullah’ – May the Peace and Mercy of God be upon you
